This Indian fruit salad recipe is made without custard powder but you can make a separate creamy Indian dessert called Fruit Custard.

I love an easy creamy fruit salad. Mexican Fresas con Crema has to be one of my favourites – the cream is made from heavy whipping cream, sour cream, condensed milk and evaporated milk.

Serve this fruit salad in the summer or during special occasions such as Holi, Eid, Ramadan, Thanksgiving or Christmas.

This recipe has almost identical resemblance to Filipino fruit salad (aka buko salad) which is made with fruit cocktail. There is addition of coconut gel (nata de coco) and young coconut shavings.

Fruit

Choose your favorite fruit such as red apples, bananas, mandarin oranges, red grapes, pears, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, mango, kiwi, pomegranate

You can also add pineapple chunks or maraschino cherries.

I often use a canned fruit cocktail and add extra bananas.

Sweetened condensed milk – Aka milkmaid in India.

Cream – readers in the united states can use cool whip. I sometimes use evaporated milk as an alternative to cream.

You can also use nestle media crema / table cream.

Optional:

Cream cheese or sour cream

Cardamom powder – to make Indian fruit salad with condensed milk.

Vanilla extract

Nuts (known as dry fruits in India) – walnuts, pecans, cashews or almonds will add texture. Keep the recipe nut free if you are aware of allergies

Mini marshmallows

Vegan

To make it vegan, use a vegan condensed milk or coconut syrup that is mixed with plant based cream alternative or a bit of dairy-free milk.

How to make Sweetened Condensed Milk Fruit Salad

Prepare your fruit by washing well then chopping into bite size pieces.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the condensed milk and cream

In the same large bowl, assemble the fruit salad by adding fruit salad to the cream mixture. Stir through until well incorporated.

For the best taste, enjoy immediately.

Place in a large serving bowl or transfer into individual cups/bowls

If you have made too much liquid, you can set it aside in the fridge then use for Tres Leche Pancakes.

Tips

Chop fruit immediately before adding to the salad – fruit such as apples tend to turn brown fast as it oxidises.

Storage

This fresh fruit salad is best eaten immediately or within a couple of hours.

However, you can place it in the fridge either in an airtight container or use plenty of plastic wrap to cover it.

You can prepare the salad in advance by making the milk cream and adding the fruit before you are ready to serve.
