I love avocado in any shape or form whether it is chopped up in salads, salsas, blended into creamy dressings, pesto, rolled into veggie sushi or transformed into Avocado Gelato.

It is also delicious just eaten plain alongside a meal.

Avocado Fries are my new favourite way of enjoying avocado and thankfully the recipe is straightforward and not labour intensive.

The fries still taste exactly like avocado so the delicious buttery flavour is not masked but enhanced by adding a thin layer of crunch.

Avocado fries can be both baked or air fried but I love the final finish that the air fryer provides. The outer layer becomes super crunchy without burning and cooks evenly all over! No more soggy or clumpy batter, just perfectly crispy healthy fries.

You still get the saltiness and crunch from potato fries but all the health benefits of avocado at the same time.

The recipe is egg-free and so I have used aquafaba for the coating but there are plenty of other substitutes which will provide great results.

These avocado chips are without cheese but the recipe can easily be adapted to suit your dietary needs or taste preference!

Why you should make this recipe:

Egg-free – this recipe is plant based, free from eggs or dairy making it suitable for vegetarians and vegans

Healthy – the air fryer is a healthier form of cooking and a great alternative to deep drying as only a spray of oil is required. The recipe is also low carb

Packed with good fats – avocados are rich in beneficial fats, which can help you feel fuller. Also, healthy fats supports skin health and the immune system

Easily made gluten-free – with a simple substitution, the coating is gluten-free and free from wheat-based products

Full of texture – these air fryer fries are perfectly crunchy on the outside but creamy on the inside

Easy to make – this recipe is not elaborate, simply slice the avocado, dip into the coating and air-fry!

Quick to prepare – there is minimal prep required for this recipe and the avocado fries crisp up in the air fryer in under 10 minutes

Kid-friendly – making avocado fries with the kids can be a fun pastime! Get the kids involved in dipping the avocado and breading and also a good way to introduce healthy fats and veggies into children’s’ diets.

Are avocados good for you?

Avocados are good for you and a great ingredient to include in your diet.

Avocados are full of almost 20 vitamins and minerals, fibre and healthy fats and contain a good amount of monounsaturated fatty acids. These are known as the good fats which are known to lower cholesterol and help protect the heart.

With this high nutritional value and fibre, avocados may also improve digestion and aid in weight loss as they keep you feeling full for longer.

It should be said though that avocado should be eaten in moderation because they are still high in fat but are a great replacement in many foods as a plant-based alternative.

Is Avocado a fruit or a vegetable?

Avocados are a fruit as the fit the definition of a fruit which is to have a seed. To be more specific, botanists define an avocado as a large berry with a single seed!

Ingredients for Vegan Avocado Fries

Full ingredients with measurements are available in the recipe card below at the end of this post

Avocado – use large or extra avocados if possible as these will create longer fries/chips. That being said, any avocado will do as long as it under-ripe and not mushy

Panko breadcrumbs – (see gluten-free options below) Panko are Japanese style breadcrumbs. They are made by lightly baking coarse breadcrumbs to give them more ‘crunch’. You can find them in the World Food aisle in most supermarkets, or through online grocery shopping.

Aquafaba – aquafaba is the liquid leftover from cooked chickpeas (or any other beans) and is a brilliant alternative to egg. Open a tin of chickpeas, drain the tin but retain the water. You can use the chickpeas to make hummus, curry or chickpea based desserts. If you do not have aquafaba you can use plant-based milk.

Seasoning/flavourings – garlic powder, onion powder and mixed dried herbs. The seasoning is mixed into the breadcrumbs so it is evenly distributed.

Sprayable cooking oil – you can use olive oil spray, sunflower oil spray or even avocado oil spray. If you do not have sprayable oil, you can use normal oil and use a pastry brush to brush over the air fryer. It may be a little more difficult to brush the oil onto the bread-crumbed avocado fries though.

You can try making the fries without any oil and see how it works for you

Optional:

Indian Spices – add onion seeds, aka kalonji and red chilli flakes add a hint of flavour without being overwhelming. The addition of these spices make these delicious Spicy Avocado Fries

Grain-free and Keto Avocado Fries

Regular avocado fries are typically made with combination of plain flour (all purpose flour) and breadcrumbs.

To keep these fries grain free use fine almond flour and unsweetened toasted coconut flakes. To coat the avocado slices in a wet mixture, use aquafaba or nut milk.

For keto avocado fries use a combination of egg, superfine almond flour and parmesan cheese.

Want to try vegan and keto-friendly avocado fries without any dairy or eggs? Use superfine almond flour and almond milk to coat.

For gluten-free avocado fries or without breadcrumbs option, use cornmeal or crushed gluten-free crackers.

Air Fryer Avocado Fries Variation

For each of these flavouring variations, simply mix into the breadcrumbs or dry coating that you are using.

Smoked paprika with garlic and onion granules

Everything bagel seasoning – consists of poppy seeds, toasted sesame seeds, dried garlic, dried onion, and salt

Italian seasoning

Grated parmesan cheese (for vegetarian and vegan safe option make sure you pick up cheese that is suitable for vegetarian and vegans or use nutritional yeast)

Cajun seasoning

Indian style seasoning – use onion seeds (kalonji seeds) and red chilli flakes

Air fryer Avocado halves

If you do not fancy cutting the avocado into chips or fries, you can also coat the avocado halves and air fry those!

These crispy avocado boats are great vessels to hold salads or sauces!

I would air fry the halves for around 10-12 minutes at the same temperature.

How to serve Avocado Fries

These fries will go great as they are with a sprinkle of sea salt and a squeeze of lime.

What to dip avocado fries in:

  • Vegan ranch dip
  • Sriracha aioli
  • Garlic aioli
  • Lime dipping sauce
  • Chipotle dipping sauce

You can also serve them as potato french fries replacements. I once served mine alongside these vegan Tawa Burgers which are made with tofu. You can also serve with any other burgers or along with pizzas.

Tips and Tricks for the perfect Avocado Fries

  1. The best avocado fries start with the perfect avocado. The avocado should ideally be under-ripe. Soft avocados that you would use for guacamole are too soft and won’t hold their shape when handling. Check the firmness of the avocado buy applying gentle pressure with your finger
  2. Lightly crush your panko breadcrumbs to make them even finer, the they will stick better to the avocado
  3. Use both hands when coating the avocado – one hand to dip into the wet mixture (the aquafaba) and the other to coat with the breadcrumbs. Breadcrumbs can easily clump together if they end up mixed with the wet mixture
  4. Spray your air fryer basket with a little cooking oil spray prior to air frying to prevent sticking
  5. Serve the avocado fries whilst they are still hot! The crispy hot exterior and warm creamy inside is a winning combination.

How to slice Avocado into fries

Using a large knife, cut the avocado in half lengthways. Twist to separate and remove the stone. I like to remove the stone by using the sharp knife – Press the knife into a stone until it holds then twist to remove it. The sharper knife, the better for this.

Next either scoop out a whole half using a spoon or peel off the skin gently.

Cut the slices by halving the halves lengthways and then cutting those again in halves or threes depending how big your avocado is.

How to make Instant Pot Air Fryer Avocado Fries

Full printable recipe in recipe card below.

I like to use my Instant Pot Air Fryer but you can use whichever air fryer.

Set aside a baking tray or plate to place your prepped fries onto.

Prepare the avocado fries as above. Set aside.

In a small shallow bowl, add the aquafaba or wet mixture of choice

In a separate shallow bowl, place the breadcrumbs/almond powder or dry coating of choice. Add flavouring to this mixture if you wish.

Using a spoon, dip the avocado into the wet mixture. Allow the majority of the mixture to drip off. Transfer into the breadcrumbs bowl and ensure the coating is evenly covering the avocado using a different spoon. You can only use one hand for wet and another for dry instead of spoons.

Place in a single layer onto a baking tray and repeat until all the fries are prepared.

Preheat the Air Fryer to 196C and then spray lightly with cooking oil.

Gently layer the avocado fries in a single layer on the air fryer basket. Spray oil again to cover the fries.

Air fry for approximately 8-10 minutes or until the coating appears golden. You do not need to flip half way through as the air will cook the fries from underneath

Serve immediately.

How to make Baked Avocado Fries

If you prefer to bake your avocado fries then you can certainly do that too.

Preheat the oven to 200C

Prepare the avocado fries as per the recipe.

Spray a little cooking oil onto a baking sheet before adding a single layer of the avocado fries.

Bake for around 15 minutes or until the coating looks crispy all over.

How to store Avocado Fries

Have leftover avocado fries? Here is how you can store them.

Avocado Fries are definitely best eaten warm straight from the air fryer or oven but they can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days before they start loosing their freshness

Spruce them up by reheating in the air fryer or oven for 2-3 minutes until warm and the coating crisps up again.

I do not recommend freezing avocado fries as they will loose their texture upon defrosting.

What do avocado fries taste like?

Avocado fries are lightly salty with a creamy, buttery centre.

Can you freeze avocado fries?

No. Avocado fries will loose their texture after freezing. They are best eaten fresh.

Can I make avocado fries ahead of time?

No. Avocados brown easily so this recipe is best prepared prior to serving.

Can I use frozen avocado for this recipe?

I would not recommend using frozen avocado as there will be too much moisture in them and the fried avocado may become soggy.

Frozen avocados are good for blending such as adding to dips or smoothies but do not hold their own if used as they are.

Can babies eat avocado fries?

Yes, actually it is a good idea to introduce avocados to your children from young age. Babies aged 7-8 months onwards can enjoy having avocado fries as finger food as the crumbs provide good grip. Ensure you have not mixed any extra salt or spices in to the bread crumbs.
