Cardamom mojito without alcohol made with real cardamom pods.

Mojito

It should be pronounced muh-hee-tow,  and is the world's renowned drink for any party.  It is believed that this classic cocktail's birthplace was Havana, Cuba.

A typical mojito is consists of white rum, soda water, sugar, lime juice, and mint.

Not only to be consumed in hot weather but all year round.

Virgin Cardamom Mojito

A unique twist on the classic Mojito!

Our cardamom mojito is actually a mocktail. This non-alcoholic drink is prepared with Indian spice Cardamom, refreshing mint, lime juice and soda water.

The simple syrup is prepared using aromatic and enticing spice cardamom pods and sugar. The cardamom creates a unique backbone of flavour and merges it well with cooling and refreshing mint.

Cardamom and its use

Cardamom or Elychi, which is how we pronounce in Hindi, is an ancient spice that is abundantly growing in southern parts of India.

It is not cheap, almost as expensive as saffron, however, you don't have to use in large quantity to get its flavours and benefits.

There are two types of cardamom pods available in the market, green and black. Green ones are smaller pods whereas black ones are larger with a deep wrinkle on them.

Both versions are heavily used in Indian cooking and both have great medicinal values.

Green cardamoms are aromatic, sweet and warm which is versatile and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes, black ones can be only used in savoury dishes.

Some recipes will call for whole cardamom pods and some will use cardamom powder. Usually, black cardamom is used whole in recipes.

Our recipes using cardamom are Homemade Indian Curry Masala Powder, Kala Jamun and Karak Chai.

Due to our obsession with home remedies, we like to keep a small amount of cardamom pods in our handbag for any bouts of nausea!

Buying and storage of Cardamom?

Generally, cardamom is available in three forms, whole cardamom, seeds and powder.

It is best to buy the whole cardamom pods which are more greenish and plump, seeds and ground cardamom loses it's freshness and flavours quite quickly.

The cardamom pods are stored in a sealed container or jar and kept away from direct sunlight in a cool and dry place.

Cardamom seeds or powder stored in a similar manner, but use it quickly as they lose its potency very quickly.

Ingredients in Non-alcoholic Cardamom Mojito

1. Cardamom - we are using green cardamom pods for this recipe. We have used Rajah Spices cardamom pods.

2. Sugar - using sugar to make a cardamom simple syrup and we have used regular white sugar works fine. For a vegan option make sure that the sugar you use it is suitable for vegan uses.

3. Soda water - any soda water or club soda will work.

4. Lime - a mojito can not be complete without using fresh lime or lime juice, get juicy and plump limes.

5. Mint -  fresh mint leaves.

Soda water and club soda are the same thing which is artficially carbonated. Do not use sparkling mineral water as it is not quite as fizzy as soda water.

How to make Virgin Cardamom Mojito with 5 ingredients step-by-step?

The first step is to make cardamom simple syrup for this recipe. Use equal parts of sugar and water.

⦿ In a pan place water, sugar and smashed cardamom pods over medium heat.

⦿ Stir until all the sugar dissolved.

⦿ Turn off the heat and let it cool, strain and store in a jar and seal tightly with the lid or use it in a recipe.

This simple syrup will keep refrigerated for about a month.

⦿ Place mint, lime or lime juice in 2 tall glass and bruise it with a muddler or pestle.

⦿ Add ice, simple syrup and soda water and mix.

⦿ Garnish with more mint and lime wedges or slices.

How to make Cardamom Mojito? Just add some white rum like Bacardi, Havana Club, C. Caroni or Captain Morgan to name a few.

Non-alcoholic Mojito Tips!

A very useful key to a great mojito is that always bruise mint and lime in the glass itself with a muddler or pestle, this process called muddling. This process releases great flavours to the drink.

But be careful not to give so much pressure as it may damage the glass and it is harmful.

If you don't want to muddle lime wedges in the glass it's totally fine as sometimes this processes lends bitter flavour to a mojito if overly muddled.  Instead, you can add lime juice with mint leaves.

If you are serving this drink for a big party, always use simple sugar syrup, not granulated sugar as it takes time to dissolve the sugar in and you don't want your guest waiting for it. Also, keep some lime juice ready too.

What to serve with Cardamom Mojito?

Since mojitos hail from Cuba, some exotic and fresh flavour food go so well with it, you may want to serve Mango & Passion fruit Salsa, Cumin Mango Salsa or Guacamole with some salty tortilla
chips.

Low-fat Black Bean & Sweet Potato Quesadilla, pair so well with this refreshing drink.

For a dessert,  No-Bake Lime, Ginger and White Chocolate Cheesecake or Caribbean Inspired Mango, Coconut and Coconut Lassi would fit the bill.

This refreshing and flavourful mojito made with cardamom simple syrup.
