In this Farali Buckwheat Upma buckwheat groats are cooked with colourful vegetables, nuts and a delicious tempering with cumin seeds, green chillies and curry leaves. It is easy to prepare and Hindu-fasting friendly. However, it can be enjoyed throughout the year - I definitely do!

Farali food is far from restrictive. There are so many delicious Navratri and vrat recipes - from breads, main dishes, sides and even sweets!
Some favourites of mine include buff vada (farali pattice), kuttu ki puri with boiled potatoes and this simple but delicious potato peanut bhaji. The best end to the meal has to be rajgira sheera with mawa.
Buckwheat groats are simple but so, so good in this recipe and a great alternative to semolina. I also use buckwheat in my blueberry, buckwheat and cashew smoothie.
I'm a huge fan of upma in all it's varieties. You can find my seviyan upma and murmura upma for something a bit different.

Buckwheat always feels like such a comforting swap in fasting dishes, and this upma turns out so light yet full of texture from the cashews and vegetables. I really enjoy this quick fasting recipe.
