Dudhi Halwa ~ Bottle Gourd Dessert

I am far from my brother,but not far from one call :-), very soon I will tie him a Rakhi when I'll visit him in India and definitely will prepare some sweet delight for him. While I am drafting this post my husband called me in our garden and showed me full moon, quickly I took a this pics.

Every year on Rakhi day we have delicious sweets and lavish dishes. This year even my daughter prepared Mango Biscotti for her brother, and I prepared Dudhi Halwa for the whole family.

You will need:-
  • 500 g dudhi - bottle gourd
  • 250 g sugar
  • 250 g mawa or khoya
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • 2-3 tbsp chopped nuts like almonds and pistachio
  • 500 ml milk
  • few drops of vanilla essence
  • pinch of edible glitter instead of varakh. optional.

Peel the dudhi and grate.
Squeeze the grated dudhi and drain the excess water.
Heat ghee in heavy bottom kadai or pan and add grated dudhi.
Keep stirring on a medium heat, then add milk.
Lower the heat and let it cook till the milk dries up. it will take 15-20 minutes. You can see ghee will separate from the dudhi.
Now add sugar, keep stirring till mixture thickens.
Add grated mawa or khoya at this stage, mix very well .
Keep stirring, add cardamom powder and nuts.
Once again mix well and turn of the heat.
Grease one plate with little ghee and pour the mixture evenly.
I sprinkled edible glitter on the halwa.
Let it cool completely and cut into desired shapes.
Serve anytime .
